A Sister's Thanksgiving Tale
"What happens in Vegas stay in Vegas", but we mostly just had fun. Our sister in law warned us not to do anything to "scare the parents".
My sister, Jen, has a conferance in Las Vegas the week after Thanksgiving, so she went out from Boston early and I met her there Thanksgiving night.
November 23
- We arrived in the evening. To get to the strip, you can take a cab for $20ish or a shuttle bus for $5.00. We opted for the latter and discovered why it was so cheap. It took over an hour to get to our hotel, because it made many stops. By the time we got to our hotel we were very hungry.
- We stayed at The Riviera.
- After we checked in we went out ot hunt for someplace to have our Thanksgiving Dinner and ended up at Kimchi Korean BBQ. It was quit an adventure. "First came the bowls of wierd stuff...". It actaully wasn't that bad.
- We walked off dinner by going down to Wynn. It was very luxurious.
November 24
- I ordered 2 Power Passes for Vegas.com. It covers admissions on a bunch of stuff on and off the strip, and was well worth it. We had to go to Caesar's Palace to pick them up. "Getting out was very difficult-we walk all over the place, when we finally got out, we felt like we escaped."
- First stop was the roller coaster at New York, New York. With the passes we were able to skip the long part of the line and got right through.
- For lunch we went to the micro brewery at Monte Carlo. We each got a sampler. The beer was good, but the flavor was not as strong as some other breweries.
- On the way to our next stopped we caught the dancing fountains in front of The Bellagio.
- Next stop was The Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at The Mirage.
- Next we went to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum at The Venetain
- Exhausted from walking, we set out for The Hilton for The Star Trek Experience.
- There are 2 "experiences" there, the Borg Invasion and Kling On Encounter. Both were fun,but if you can only do one, do the Borg Invasion.
- We had dinner at Quarks. With dinner, Jen and I split a Warp Core Breech. It was yummy and I think the only reason I was able to walk back to the Riviera.
November 25
- We started down the opposite end of the strip and worked our way back.
- Coca Cola World-It's really just a store, and they don't many Diet Coke products or I would have bought something.
- M&M WOrld-They have a really silly 3D movie and lots and lots of M&M Merchandise including M&M in many colors, but no tan. (I wanted to buy tan, to put back into the M&M's afeter I removed the blue ones.)
- Luxor-Egyptian theme-also note there is a free tram running between Madelay Bay, the Luxor and Excalibur.
- Excalibur-We were hoping for a more ren faire theme inside, but no, not much effort inside at all, we were very disappointed.
- Lunch at El Folrentio in New York,New York. I had a yummy seafood ravioli. The food was tasty.
- Aladdin-We searched for the illusive Museum of the American Cocktail. We didn't find it, but I got a texted message later in the week from Jen, who said it was in a restaurant covering one wall.
- Next we walked around the mall at the Venitian, which was out favorite hotel. From one of the outdoor walkways, we watched the volocano at the Mirage.
- On the way to dinner, we stopped at the Margaritaville gift shop. They had a couple really funny things...a salt shaker that said, "Lost Shaker of Salt" and a t-shirt that said, "I'm the woman to blame".
- We had dinner at a little Pizza place called Margarita Baby. The Frings (French Fries and Onion Rings were good...as were the margaritas.)
- At the Riviera we played thier silly slot game. ($20 for $40) Basically if you don't win any money, you get a nice gift. I ended up with a glass game set (Checkers, Chess, Backgammon) and Jen got a nice fleece. Not bad for $20, but the actual playing of the slots was quick and anti-climatic.
November 26
- We went to mass at the Guardian Angel Cathdral...yes there is a Catholic Church on the strip...it was small, but very nice and NOT tacky at all.
- Brunch at Frontier. I really only like eggs anyway, so it was perfect for me. "The Waffles were shped like the card suites."
- Circus Circus to see a juggleing show which was quit good, but there were waaay to many kids running around.
- We walked to Rio, which we later found out was dumb, because there is a free shuttle from Caesers, Bally's, Harrah's, and Paris. (We took this back to the strip). At Rio, they have a Mardi Gras Parade on the ceiling. It was pretty cool.
- Before what we thought was going to be a long walk back, we decided we needed a drink, so we stopped at The Tilted Kilt. We had a very tasty TK Lager, which had a similar flavor to Newcastle.
- Treasure Island to see the outdorr show "Sirens of Treasure Island". We were early so we tried to get a drink at Kahunaville. After 20 minutes of waiting for a waiter, we left and staked out a spot.
- Dinner at Grand Lux Cafe in the Venitain. I've eaten at the one in LA, at I knew the food was great! We had the Oriental Chicken Nachos, which I highly recommend. I had my first dirty martini at the one in LA, so Jen had her first that night.
- We played real slots at the Riviera. I won over $100 and played only $15.
November 27
- Stratosphere-There are 3 "Extreme" rides at the top. The first is Big Shot. It shoots you up a tower, then lets you drop. The second, X-Scream is a roller coaster car that drops off the edge of the tower. The third is Insanity, which is "swings" that spin off the tower. That one looks the scariest, but is really relaxing...as long as you don't look straight down.

- Lunch at The Caravan Cafe at Sahara. It was ok, like an upscale Dennys.
- We had coupons to play in the slot tournament at the Riviera. That was fun! I scored a lot, but I didn't come close to the top score.
- I returned to LA that evening.
